Ghadira Nature Reserve

Situated alongside Mellieħa Bay in northern Malta, Għadira Nature Reserve is the island’s oldest protected wetland and an important Natura 2000 sites. Managed by BirdLife Malta, this unique reserve safeguards one of the country’s rarest habitats while providing a vital resting place for thousands of migratory birds travelling between Europe and Africa.

Ghadira reserve is recognised as a Natura 2000 site, a Special Area of Conservation (SAC), a Special Protection Area (SPA) and a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. Its shallow brackish lagoons and saltmarshes represent habitats that have become increasingly scarce across the Mediterranean region.

Natural processes transformed the Ghadira site into seasonal wetlands, attracting a remarkable diversity of wildlife. Recognising its ecological value, BirdLife Malta established conservation management that has allowed the reserve to become one of the country’s most significant wildlife sanctuaries.

Each year, around 140 species of migratory birds use Għadira as a safe refuge during their demanding journeys. Flamingos, herons, egrets, ducks, waders and many smaller passerines can all be observed depending on the season. Resident species, including Moorhens, Little Ringed Plovers and various warblers, breed successfully within the protected habitat, demonstrating the reserve’s importance for both migration and reproduction.

The wetlands also support numerous insects, amphibians and reptiles, while specialised saltmarsh plants have adapted to thrive in the reserve’s saline conditions. Together, these species create a rich and interconnected ecosystem that contributes significantly to Malta’s biodiversity.

Visitors can explore the reserve via carefully designed pathways and bird observation hides that provide exceptional opportunities for wildlife watching and nature photography while minimising disturbance to sensitive species. Throughout the year, BirdLife Malta organises educational activities, guided walks and environmental programmes that promote awareness of wetland conservation and the importance of protecting biodiversity.

Għadira Nature Reserve is not only a bird sanctuary. It is also an example of how protected areas can balance conservation, education and responsible public access. As one of Malta’s most treasured Natura 2000 sites, it continues to provide a safe haven for wildlife while connecting thousands of visitors each year with the beauty and importance of the natural world.
