Snorkel Trails

Ambjent Malta is taking the lead in promoting Malta’s snorkel trails, encouraging the public to discover and appreciate the richness of the marine environment and the importance of conserving it.

The initiative began in 2023, when Ambjent Malta started organising guided snorkelling activities for the public at Ir-Ramla tal-Mixquqa (Golden Bay) and Għajn Tuffieħa (Riviera Bay). The activities were organised over a period of three years, providing members of the public with the opportunity to explore Malta’s marine environment and learn more about the habitats and species found along the coast.

Building on this experience, Ambjent Malta is now further promoting the snorkel trails through dedicated public events at both beaches. These events will encourage visitors to make use of the trails and their digital guides, allowing them to independently discover and learn about the marine biodiversity found within the area.

Snorkel trails are an effective tool for developing ecological awareness and encouraging greater public involvement in the conservation of marine biodiversity and related management processes. They also provide an opportunity to raise awareness of sensitive marine habitats within coastal Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), in line with the conservation objectives and measures established for Malta’s marine Natura 2000 sites.

The trails at Ir-Ramla tal-Mixquqa and Għajn Tuffieħa, located within the Marine Protected Area ‘Żona fil-baħar bejn Rdum Majjiesa u Għar Lapsi’ (MT0000101), were originally established in 2013 through the MEDPAN NORTH project (2G-MED09-270 MEDPAN NORTH).

Through the current initiative, Ambjent Malta, together with the Environment & Resources Authority (ERA) and Nature Trust Malta, is building on this legacy to bring the trails closer to the public and promote a greater appreciation of Malta’s marine biodiversity.
