Marine Litter Removal and Cleanup

Ambjent Malta has been actively engaged in the removal of marine litter since 2020. Efforts have primarily focused on the collection of macro-litter (2.5 cm–100 cm) from the marine and coastal environments, and where feasible, the removal of mega-litter (>1 m). Clean-up operations are conducted across coastal/sandy areas, surface waters (floating litter), and the seabed, ensuring a comprehensive approach to marine litter management. Ambjent Malta is also assessing accumulation of marine litter.

These activities are complemented through collaboration with various non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the Professional Diving Schools Association (PDSA), particularly in relation to seabed clean-ups as well as in some instances together with Saving Our Blue. Additional partnerships with NGOs have supported the targeted removal of ghost nets, contributing to the reduction of hazards to marine life and habitats.

To date, approximately 8 tonnes of marine litter have been collected through these coordinated efforts.
