Silva Green Pathways

Originally afforested during the 1970s, these woodlands are primarily dominated by Aleppo Pine (Pinus halepensis). Over recent years, both sites have experienced significant environmental pressures, including severe man-made fire incidents which resulted in the loss of important habitats and thousands of mature trees. These disturbances also contributed to the spread of invasive non-native species, particularly Acacia species.

The project aims to restore and strengthen these ecosystems through a series of habitat rehabilitation and biodiversity enhancement measures. Key objectives include the creation of ecological corridors and buffers that improve habitat connectivity between Natura 2000 sites, while also increasing the area’s potential to support migratory species and local wildlife.

Silva Green Pathways also focuses on the control and management of invasive non-native plants that negatively impact native biodiversity. Restoration efforts include the planting of 1,897 indigenous trees and shrubs selected for their resilience to Mediterranean climatic conditions, ecological importance, and low flammability characteristics.

Additional interventions include:

• the restoration of degraded landscapes and traditional vernacular structures;
• the installation of water-efficient irrigation systems connected to New Water infrastructure;
• wildfire risk reduction measures through improved fuel load management; and
• the use of mulching techniques to improve soil-water retention and soil quality.
