Malta National Trails
Discover Malta's Natural Heritage, One Step at a Time
Malta National Trails
The Malta National Walking Trails Project was created to encourage residents and visitors alike to explore the Maltese Islands on foot while fostering a greater appreciation for the country’s natural and cultural heritage. Through a network of 16 carefully planned walking routes spanning approximately 310 kilometres, the project offers opportunities to experience Malta and Gozo’s diverse landscapes in a sustainable and meaningful way.
The trails connect some of the Islands’ most remarkable locations, including dramatic coastal cliffs, peaceful valleys, protected Natura 2000 sites, historic fortifications and traditional rural landscapes. Designed to accommodate walkers of different hiking abilities, the network provides an accessible way to discover the countryside while promoting healthy outdoor recreation and responsible enjoyment of Malta’s natural environment.
Promoting Sustainable Access to Nature
The Malta National Walking Trails Project reflects Ambjent Malta’s commitment to balancing public enjoyment of the countryside with the conservation of the Islands’ natural resources. By encouraging people to explore nature responsibly, the project helps foster environmental awareness and strengthens the connection between communities and the landscapes that shape Malta’s identity.
Walking through these natural areas provides visitors with the opportunity to observe native habitats, appreciate the ecological importance of protected sites and gain a deeper understanding of Malta’s biodiversity. At the same time, the project promotes sustainable tourism by encouraging low-impact outdoor activities that respect both the environment and local communities.
A Journey Through Malta’s Diverse Landscapes
Each trail offers a unique experience, showcasing different aspects of the Maltese Islands’ natural and cultural heritage. Walkers can discover the spectacular cliffs of Ħad-Dingli, explore the tranquil countryside surrounding Buskett, experience the natural beauty of Comino, follow the historic Victoria Lines fortifications, and enjoy the rich biodiversity found within Malta’s protected Natura 2000 network. Together, these routes highlight the remarkable variety of landscapes that can be experienced across the islands.
Connecting Communities with Nature
Walking is one of the simplest and most sustainable ways to experience the environment. The Malta National Walking Trails Project encourages people to slow down, reconnect with nature and appreciate the ecological, historical and cultural significance of the landscapes around them. By making these areas more accessible, the project helps cultivate a stronger sense of environmental stewardship while supporting the long-term conservation of Malta’s natural heritage for future generations.
