Is-Salini

The Salini area, also known as the Salina Nature Reserve, is an ecologically important Natura 2000 site located in the Burmarrad Valley, within the limits of St Paul’s Bay. Managed by BirdLife Malta in collaboration with Ambjent Malta, the site is a valuable refuge for biodiversity and one of the Maltese Islands’ rarest and most important wetland habitats.

Originally a harbour, the Salini area today consists of approximately 154,000 square metres of saline marshland, together with a number of traditional saltpans built on a reclaimed island of clay surrounded by garrigue. The combination of saline marshland, saltpans and surrounding terrestrial habitats creates a unique environment that supports a variety of plants and animals, including species that are specially protected under the Natura 2000 network. The site is particularly important for wetland biodiversity and provides valuable habitat for resident and migratory birds, as well as other wildlife.

The saltpans are an integral part of the site’s ecological and cultural value. These shallow pools, traditionally used for the production of sea salt, provide important feeding and resting areas for birds and contribute to the diversity of habitats found within the reserve. Their maintenance is therefore important not only for preserving Malta’s traditional heritage, but also for supporting the ecological functions of the area.

Every year, national funding is provided to BirdLife Malta to implement a number of conservation measures at the site. These measures aim to improve the conservation status of the habitats and species for which the area has been protected. Through its management and conservation work, BirdLife Malta contributes to maintaining and enhancing the site’s natural features, supporting biodiversity and ensuring that the area continues to provide suitable conditions for wildlife.

Ambjent Malta also plays an important role in the conservation and management of the Salini Natura 2000 site. Through regular maintenance, habitat management and other conservation actions, Ambjent Malta supports efforts to safeguard the site’s ecological value. The presence of Ambjent Malta’s Nature Stewards further strengthens the care and protection of the area. Nature Stewards help monitor the site, provide information to visitors and encourage responsible behaviour, helping people better appreciate the importance of protecting Malta’s natural environment.

The conservation of Salini, however, is a shared responsibility. Members of the general public can play an important role by respecting the site and its wildlife. Visitors are encouraged to remain on designated paths, avoid disturbing birds and other animals, keep dogs under control where required, and never leave litter behind. It is also important not to damage plants, interfere with the saltpans or enter restricted areas. By following these simple measures, everyone can contribute to protecting this unique natural environment.

The Salini Natura 2000 site is a reminder of the importance of Malta’s wetlands and the need to protect them for future generations. Through the combined efforts of BirdLife Malta, Ambjent Malta, Nature Stewards and the public, this special area can continue to support wildlife, preserve its unique habitats and remain a valuable part of Malta’s natural heritage.
