Geographic Information Systems (GIS) play a central role in many projects implemented by Ambjent Malta. GIS technologies are extensively used to support environmental management, ecological monitoring, data analysis, and decision-making processes across a wide range of initiatives.
At Ambjent Malta, GIS is applied at multiple levels. On-site environmental data is collected through field surveys and location-based mobile applications configured by the department’s GIS team. This data is directly integrated into GIS systems and geodatabases, allowing information to be analysed, monitored, and processed in near real-time.
The use of GIS also supports data visualisation and reporting through the development of statistics, interactive dashboards, and map-based tools that improve accessibility and interpretation for project teams and senior management. In addition, GIS technologies enable the creation of public applications and websites, including initiatives such as the Malta Walking Trails website and Malta Botanic Gardens platform.
Another important area of work is GeoAI, which combines artificial intelligence with geospatial technologies and environmental data. GeoAI is primarily utilised within research and environmental monitoring projects where artificial intelligence tools assist in identifying patterns, species, and environmental changes more efficiently.
GeoAI technologies have already been successfully applied in projects such as MEDMAQUIS, where drone imagery and artificial intelligence were used to assist in the identification of invasive alien and/or plant species.
Through the integration of GIS and GeoAI technologies, Ambjent Malta continues to strengthen data-driven environmental management, ecological monitoring, and sustainable conservation efforts across the Maltese Islands.
